5 Hideous Animals

By kswanson88

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m sick and tired of seeing cute animals plastered all over everywhere. What about the ugly animals?? Well, here they are, some of the ugliest animals you’ll ever (hopefully not) see on the face of the earth.

The Aye-aye

Looking like a rat after a very bad night, the Aye-aye definitely ranks right up there with the ugliest of them. It is the largest nocturnal (night-time) primate and uses it’s rodent-like teeth and long middle finger much like a woodpecker uses it’s beak:it taps on trees to find insect, then gnaws a hole in the bark and then digs out the bugs with it’s middle finger. Personally I think this thing can stay out in the woods where it belongs.

The Blob Fish

Boy, Casper the Ghost has really let himself go. Well no, that’s actually a blob fish. This sad-looking thing lives in the deep waters off the coast of Australia and Tasmania and is rarely seen by humans because of the inaccessibility of its habitat. The water pressure where they live is several dozen times higher than at sea level. It’s flesh is made of a gelatinous mass which is slightly less dense than water, which allows it to float above the bottom without using any energy to swim. It has very little muscle (well look at it!), but that isn’t a problem as it mainly eats what floats in front of it. It looks so depressed…

The Star-nosed Mole

This kind of reminds me of the scene in Jeepers Creepers II right after the monster pulls off his own head…but this is far less scary than that. It’s a Star-nosed mole, so named for the ring of 22 fleshy pink tentacles at the end of it’s snout. These are incredibly sensitive and are used to identify its food by touch. They are covered by nearly 100,000 touch receptors called Eiman’s Organs. Aside from being so ugly, the Star-nosed mole also has the distinction of being the worlds fastest eater, taking just 120 milliseconds to identify and consume an item of food. Adults only grow to be 15-20 in length, but I still wouldn’t want one of these near me.

The Naked Molerat

Image

No, that isn’t a bratwurst with legs, it’s a naked mole rat. They live underground in colonies of several dozen animals led by a queen rat, which is the only female to mate and have children. Some of them use their snouts and claws to dig tunnels, while others gather food for the rest of the colony, and still others are tasked with tending to the queen. They also have the strange characteristic of being immune to the pain of acid and extremely hot peppers. So don’t ever get into a pepper-eating contest with one,  you’ll be sorry. Wow that thing is ugly, but I suppose his momma still loves him.

The Hagfish

Words fail me at the sight of this one. It’s a hag fish. Very apt name if you ask me. They live mainly where there is soft mud at the bottom of the water. They are blind, and so find food by their sense of smell. Probably the most disgusting thing about the hagfish is that it has a habit of pouring slime out of it’s mucous sacs. It is said that one small hagfish can easily fill a 2 gallon bucket with slime.

So there you have it. 5 of the most disgusting things to walk, crawl or swim the face of the earth. I hope I never see any of them up close.

Those are all pretty hideous, but the blob fish is the most disturbing. It looks like a cartoon character come to life…and it doesn’t look happy about it.
